Ce palmarès a été établi à l’initiative de Claude-Jean Philippe, avec le soutien de la Mairie de Paris. Soixante-dix-huit critiques et historiens ont participé à ce classement, forcément subjectif, et -il faut bien le reconnaître- très académique. Cette initiative permettra cependant aux lecteurs des Cahiers du cinéma de se remémorer quelques belles pages de l'histoire du cinéma. Quant aux Internautes, ils pourront visionner sur le site de la revue des extraits des quinze premiers films du classement.

Les "15 plus beaux films du monde" seraient donc:
